About Nowadays Theatre Company:
Nowadays Theatre is a Toronto-based not-for-profit company founded by Aida Keykhaii and Mohammad Yaghoubi in 2016. It is a highly acclaimed theatre company with over a decade of background in Iran with its Farsi name: ‘Inrooz-ha’, which means: ‘Nowadays’.
Our works have been performed in Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Kurdistan, Russia, Sweden, The Czech Republic, Turkey, and the USA.
Based on its mandates, the company is committed to serving diversity and carrying over the commitment to these groups by collaborating with diverse, multicultural theatre artists. According to the definition of priority groups, the company directly employs artists of colour.
Nowadays Theatre was the 2018-19 RBC Emerging Company in Residence at the Canadian stage, where we presented ‘The Only Possible Way’ written and directed by Mohammad Yaghoubi on March 29-31, 2019.
In 2019, Nowadays Theatre presented ‘Swim Team’ directed by Aida keykhaii at the 2018 SummerWorks, and it was in NOW’s annual list of ‘the best of the Fest’. ‘Swim Team’ was also mentioned in the list of Canadian Stage Awards for Direction as ‘Honourable Mentions’.
In January 2020, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, we presented the English premiere of the celebrated play’ Winter of 88′ written and directed by Mohammad Yaghoubi, at the 2020 Next Stage Theatre Festival. The production received amazing reviews, including 5Ns review from Now Magazine.
Our most recent works include the English premiere of ‘Heart of A Dog‘ written and directed by Mohammad Yaghoubi with the support of the Toronto Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts at the Next Stage Theatre Festival in January 2022, and ‘Persimmon‘ a 360-degree video project written and directed by Mohammad Yaghoubi with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts in August 2022.
Eager to engage the Farsi speaking community in more impactful ways rather than just as audience members, they held eight workshops in Toronto since 2016. These workshops resulted in stage performances of Persian plays in Toronto.
Since 2016, they have performed eleven plays, primarily for Farsi speaking community of Toronto. Productions include: ‘Proof’, ‘The Pillowman’, ‘The Monsters’, ‘Sleeping in an Empty Cup’, ‘Iceland’, ‘Angels in Iran’, ‘A Moment of Silence’ (English premiere), ‘Swim Team’ (English premiere), ‘Dance of Torn Papers’ (English premiere), ‘The Only Possible Way’ (English premiere), ‘Winter of 88’ (English premiere), Heart of a Dog (English premiere).
